PLACEMENT: Alba Trees, week 1

This week I commenced an 8 week work placement with Alba Trees, a forest nursery in East Lothian. I was welcomed by Chris Allan, General Manager and Safety Advisor, who took me through the necessary and thorough health and safety paperwork, and kindly gave me another tour of the site (as it had been some months and very different weather since the first time I visited and was shown around).

Activities:

  • Health & Safety Induction
  • Site tour
  • Introduction to Team I’ll be working with and key staff
  • Shadowing Ann while product locating
  • Weeding Bilberry stock
  • Picking and preparing stock for despatch

Lots of paperwork to start off with to make sure I’m aware of all safety procedures around the site. Hi-vis vests, safety boots, and waterproofs are a must! With lots of machines, loading/shifting vehicles, and stacked boxes, following marked pedestrian paths is very important too!

Finding my bearings in a site tour. This is the seeding shed with nursery workers hard at work making lots of lovely baby trees.

Alba Trees produces large scale orders for companies, organisations, and local authorities. They also offer smaller orders to individual customers. This is the location where the direct customer-faced orders are picked and prepared, and where I will be based during my placement.
